Gate Openers & Access Control

The opener moves the gate; the access system decides who can make it move. We install and repair both, on new gates and on the gate you already have.

Three parts that work together

Every automatic gate has an operator (the motor and arm or drive that moves it), access devices (the remotes, keypads, intercoms or app that tell it to open), and safety devices (the photo eyes and safety edges that stop it from closing on a car or a person). A problem in any one of them looks the same from the driveway: the gate will not do what you ask.

For a house, the usual setup is a swing or slide operator with a battery backup, two or three remotes, a keypad at the gate and photo eyes. Community and business entrances add an intercom or telephone entry for visitors, card or fob readers that can be switched off one at a time, and an exit sensor so cars leaving do not need a code. In Southwest Florida we also plan for lightning and outages: surge protection on the power and low-voltage lines, and a battery that is tested at every visit.

Device comparison

Operators first, then the ways in. Most gates use one operator and two or three kinds of access device.

Openers and access devices
Device type Best for Power source Access method
Linear (arm) swing operator Residential; light commercial AC with battery backup, or solar DC A ram arm pushes and pulls the leaf; needs room behind the post
Articulated-arm swing operator Residential and commercial AC with battery backup A folding arm on the pier face; good where there is little room behind the post
Underground swing operator Residential estate entrances AC, low-voltage motors Motor in a box under the hinge; hidden, but it must be kept from flooding
Slide gate operator Residential and commercial AC with battery backup, or solar DC A geared motor drives a rack along the gate; suits wide openings
Remote transmitters Residential; resident fobs in communities Coin or small battery Press a button in the car or on a key ring
Keypad Residential and commercial Wired from the operator, or battery Enter a code; separate codes for family, guests and vendors
Intercom or telephone entry Commercial and community entrances AC, often with a phone line or cellular module A visitor calls a resident, who lets them in from a phone
Smart controller (app) Residential; small commercial From the operator; needs Wi-Fi or cellular signal Open, close and check the gate from a phone app, with a log of use
Card or fob reader Commercial and HOA AC with backup Present a card or fob; each one can be turned off on its own
Vehicle exit sensor Commercial and community exits From the operator A loop or sensor in the drive opens the gate for cars leaving

Compatibility checklist

What we check before recommending an opener or an access system for a gate you already have.

Your gate

  • Gate type: swing or slide, single or double, and the length and rough weight of each leaf or panel.
  • Condition: it moves freely by hand, hangs level, and the hinges, rollers and posts are solid.
  • Room: space behind the posts for a swing arm, or a clear run beside the opening for a slide operator.

Power

  • At the gate: an outlet or a circuit nearby, or how far the house is if a line has to be run.
  • Solar: a spot for the panel with sun most of the day, clear of palm and oak shade.
  • Backup: room in the control box for a battery, and surge protection on the incoming lines.

Wi-Fi and cellular

  • Wi-Fi: a usable signal at the gate itself, not only at the house, if you want app access.
  • Cellular: coverage at the gate for a cellular intercom or controller, and who pays for the plan.
  • Users: how many people need access, and whether codes or fobs must be turned off one at a time.

Safety comes with the opener

An automatic gate is a heavy object moving on its own, so the safety devices are part of the job, not an extra. Operators are built to UL 325, which sorts installations into four usage classes, from a single-family driveway to restricted industrial sites, and requires monitored entrapment protection. The gate itself should follow ASTM F2200: no gaps near the ground where a hand or foot can be caught, covered rollers on slide gates and solid stops at each end. The process and standards page explains how we check both.

App access, outages and safety

Can I open my gate from my phone?

Yes, with a smart controller or a cellular entry system added to the operator. The controller lets you open and close the gate from an app, see whether it is open, and often share access with family or a pool service. It needs a usable Wi-Fi signal at the gate or a cellular plan, and the app is only as reliable as that connection, so we recommend keeping a remote and a keypad working alongside it. Many seasonal residents use app access to let in a landscaper while they are up north.

What happens during a power outage?

A battery backup keeps an AC operator running for a number of cycles after the power goes out; how many depends on the operator, the gate's weight and the battery's age and charge. Solar operators run from their battery anyway. When the battery is spent, the gate stays where it is, and you use the manual release to open it by hand. Backup batteries wear out after a few years, faster in a hot control box, so we test them at every visit.

Will an opener work on my old gate?

If the gate swings or rolls freely, hangs level and sits on solid posts, usually yes. If it drags, sags or binds, it needs repair first: an opener cannot fix a heavy, crooked gate, and the gate will wear the opener out. The checklist above covers what we look at.

Are openers safe around children and pets?

A properly installed one is. Automatic gate operators sold in the US are built to UL 325, which since 2016 has required monitored entrapment protection: photo eyes, safety edges or similar devices that the operator checks are present and working before it will run. We fit and test them on every installation and repair, and never bypass them. Keep remotes away from children and the path clear while the gate moves.

Adding an opener or a new way in?

Tell Declan what kind of gate you have and how you want to open it. We check the gate, the power and the signal at the gate before we recommend anything.
